Monthly talk series kick-off with Dr. Benito Sanchez

Dr. Benito Sanchez (UCLouvain)

Mobilising antidiscrimination law to secure the right to housing: A focus on segregation

In this talk, Dr. Benito Sanchez will present the main lines of argument and results of his PhD thesis “Securing Housing for All in Diverse European Societies: Applying International and European Antidiscrimination Law to the Housing Context” (2020). He will argue that antidiscrimination law can be successfully mobilised to secure the right to adequate housing, and that it moreover allows us to address certain dimensions that cannot be sufficiently tackled through the right to housing alone. Dr. Benito Sanchez takes housing segregation as an example to show the added value of antidiscrimination law, setting this in light of recent developments (such as the situation in Cañada Real in Spain) and making an explicit connection between the right to housing and the rights to energy and water.

About the monthly EVICT talks:

On the third Thursday of every month, we will have a speaker on a topic related to evictions, the right to housing, housing law, the (complex) relation between international law and national law, and/or data science. Each month, we will have a different international speaker (ranging from scholars to practitioners) who will offer fascinating insights into their area of expertise.

For now, the talks will be held online. Each of these talks will begin at 4:00 pm and end at 5:00 pm (Central European Time, UTC+01:00).
