EVICT Talk with Mr. Miloon Kothari – On the Right to Adequate Housing

Watch the previous EVICT talk with Mr. Miloon Kothari:

On the Right to Adequate Housing:

Mr. Kothari is the Former UN Special Rapporteur on Adequate Housing, and is currently a visiting Professor at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies. He also recently received a new mandate from the UN Human Rights Council to inquire into the alleged violations of international human rights and humanitarian law in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, including East Jerusalem.

The lecture will briefly cover the development of the right to adequate housing at the UN and demonstrate how the articulation of this fundamental human right has contributed to the standard setting on forced evictions at the UN. Mr. Kothari will explain his work as the first UN Special Rapporteur on Adequate Housing, including the development of the 2008 UN Basic Principles and Guidelines on Development based Displacement and Evictions. He will give examples of how these standards are being used across the world. The lecture will also cover the continuing grave situation of forced evictions around the world, the  many obstacles people and communities are facing when confronted with evictions and strategies to counter evictions.”
